Report: Red Sox Players Threatened

BOSTON (WBZ) ― There will be extra security with the Red Sox in Florida for the next three days, because of a reported threat against some players.

According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox received a "mailed threat" recently that targeted black and Latin players, citing at least two by name. The players have been told about the threat and will likely have security with them when they're away from Tropicana Field during their three-day visit to Tampa starting Monday.

The threat was believed to be postmarked in Memphis, Tenn., according to the report. The suspect, who has not been named, is said to be from Baltimore, but lives in the Memphis area. There have not been any arrests.

The Herald report claimed the Red Sox are sending at least two of their top security officials and another security team is due from Major League Baseball's office in New York. The paper said the FBI and police officers in St. Petersburg, Boston, Memphis and Baltimore have also been informed of the threat.

There has been no comment from the Red Sox or Major League Baseball.

There does not appear to be a connection to a brawl earlier this month between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Red Sox, according to the Herald. This will be their first meeting since the June 5 incident at Fenway Park.
