Rays Slugger Native To Massachusetts
HAVERHILL (WBZ) ―
As the Red Sox battle Tampa Bay in the AL Championship Series, one Rays player stands out to Massachusetts.
The Rays are led by slugger Carlos Pena, who is a Haverhill native. Pena says he is thrilled to be taking on his home state's team.
"(I've had) great support," Pena said. "But that's what it's all about friendship and family. That's something that I really cherish."
Pena's family continues to live in Haverhill. Their home is a picture book of their son's rise to major league stardom.
"It's one of those moments they've been waiting for for many years," said Pena's father, Felipe Pena. "Right now, of course, I think he should be a little nervous."
In
Pena's blog Friday, he writes that he just wants to freeze this moment in history.
The Haverhill High School graduate once told his school advisor how he learned to hit a baseball with mangos and beans in the Dominican Republic.
"He could actually fill his mouth up with beans, spit the beans out and hit them," said Haverhill High School advisor Don Davoli.
Pena's brother, Pedro Pena, is also a baseball player. But if his career fizzles, he has a fall back.
Pedro Pena has a PhD in bio-genetic engineering.
