Jason Bay Becomes A U.S. Citizen

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Red Sox left fielder Jason Bay had big plans on the team's day off Thursday.

He became an American citizen in a ceremony at Faneuil Hall. Bay passed the citizenship exam last month.

Bay told WBZ Radio he's excited.

"My wife is American, my girls are American as well. This is where I spend most of my time."

"Although it's a big deal, it doesn't mean I cease being Canadian. I'll always be Canadian. I understand for a lot of people this is a very big deal. I'm pretty excited."

Bay was born in Trail, British Columbia.

The last Red Sox player to become an American citizen was designated hitter David Ortiz last year.

Bay's predecessor in left field, Manny Ramirez, became a U.S. citizen in 2006.
