Red Sox captain Jason Varitek has exercised his $3 million option to remain with the Red Sox.
Earlier this week, the Red Sox decided against picking up the $5 million team option on the 37-year old catcher.
Varitek has played 13 seasons in Boston. He will likely play a back-up role to catcher Victor Martinez in 2010.
Varitek batted .209 with 14 home runs and 51 RBI in 109 games last season.
He led the American League with a 3.87 catcher ERA and ranked second among AL backstops with a .997 fielding percentage (3 errors/896 total chances).
