Red Sox assistant general manager Jed Hoyer is reportedly close to becoming the new general manager of the San Diego Padres.
That's according to
ESPN's Buster Olney.
Hoyer was also a candidate for the Washington Nationals GM job earlier this year.
San Diego fired general manager Kevin Towers earlier this month after 14 years with the team.
Hoyer is 35 years old.
When Theo Epstein left the Sox temporarily in 2005, Hoyer and Ben Cherington shared the GM duties.
According to the
Boston Globe, Towers has a standing offer to join Epstein's staff.
