Papelbon Frustrated With Contract Negotiations

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WBZ) ― It appears Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon is not happy.

Speaking to reporters after the Red Sox played the Pittsburgh Pirates in spring training Tuesday, Papelbon said he's not thrilled with the way contract negotiations are going with the team.

Papelbon is negotiating a contract for this season. The Red Sox have a right to automatically renew him to a one-year deal because of service time.

Papelbon wants around $900,000 which is what Phillies slugger Ryan Howard made last season, his second in the major leagues. According to Papelbon, the Red Sox are offering $525,000. He made $425,000 last year.

According to WBZ's Dan Roche, the Sox may be offering a long term deal, but Papelbon would have to be willing to give up a year or two of free agency, which he is not willing to do.
