Red Sox Trade Manny To Dodgers

Red Sox Pick Up Jason Bay In Three-Team Deal

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The Boston Red Sox have traded Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-team deal that brings Jason Bay to Boston, WBZ has learned.

The trade announcement was made Thursday just as the team's 4 p.m. deadline for making trades without waivers expired.   The trade is part of a three-team deal between the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Boston will get Pittsburgh outfielder Jason Bay.  In exchange, the Red Sox will send left fielder Brandon Moss and pitcher Craig Hansen to Pittsburgh.

In addition, the Dodgers are giving third-baseman Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris to the Pirates.  LaRoche, Moss and Hansen will join Pittsburgh and Morris will go to Class A Hickory.

The Red Sox will pay out the remaining $7 million on Ramirez's contract.  He may become a free agent at the end of the season.

Ramirez left Fenway Park Thursday afternoon in an SUV.  He made no comment to reporters as the vehicle drove by.

Ramirez was hitting .299 with a team-leading 20 homers and 68 RBIs for Boston.

There had been talk all week of the Red Sox trying to unload the disgruntled outfielder to either Los Angeles or to the Florida Marlins.

"When a player like Manny becomes available, I don't think there's a manager in baseball who wouldn't say they're interested," said Dodgers skipper Joe Torre, whose Yankees teams went toe-to-toe with Ramirez for years. "It was something that happened very quickly, obviously."

As of early Thursday, it appeared Ramirez might be on his way to the Florida Marlins. But when those talks fizzled, the Red Sox and Pirates found a willing third partner in the Dodgers.

Ramirez increased his criticism of the Red Sox on Wednesay, saying the team didn't deserve him.  But Boston, aware of the slugger's ability and his role on two championship teams, wanted to get a player or players who could help in the final two months of the season.

On Sunday, Ramirez criticized the Red Sox, telling ESPNdeportes, "I'm tired of them. They're tired of me."

Later Sunday, he said in the clubhouse, "What I said was, if the Red Sox think they can find a trade that's going to make their team better and both sides are going to be happy, I'm going to agree. But they cannot find a trade. It's something simple. It's no big deal."

The often contentious relationship between Ramirez and the Red Sox included him requesting trades after the 2005 and 2006 season.

Manny's Career With Boston

Ramirez, 36, spent eight years with the Boston Red Sox and was named the MVP of the 2004 World Series and has been named an All Star each year he has been with Boston.

This is the slugger's 15th season in the major leagues. He began his career with the Cleveland Indians. The Red Sox nearly traded him to the Texas Rangers for Alex Rodriguez in 2003.

Ramirez has 20 grand slams, the second most in baseball history. He hit his 500th career home run this year and is one of just eight players to hit at least 20 homers in 14 consecutive seasons. He is also the all-time leader in post-season home runs with 24.

In the 2007 playoffs, Ramirez led the Red Sox in RBIs and walks.  He helped the team win two World Series -- in 2004 and 2007.
