Red Sox manager Terry Francona says starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is out of the team's rotation indefinitely, WBZ's Dan Roche has learned.
Francona said Matsuzaka will have a medical exam to see if there is anything physically wrong with him.
Matsuzaka was outpitched Friday night by Kenshin Kawakami of the Atlanta Braves. Boston lost 8-2.
He is 1-5 with an 8.24 ERA, giving up six runs Friday night and failing to get an out in the fifth inning.
The struggling pitcher has failed to reach the sixth inning for the sixth time in his last eight starts in his third year with the team.
He has cost the Red Sox $103 million over six years, including a $51 million fee for the right to negotiate with him.
