WBZ-TV's Dan Roche has confirmed that the Red Sox have signed free agent first baseman Sean Casey to a one-year, $800,000 contract for 2008.
The left-handed hitter will serve as a back-up to Kevin Youkilis at first and will serve as a pinch-hitter. The 33-year-old hit .296 with 4 home runs and 54 RBI last season with Detroit. He had an on-base percentage of .353.
Casey has spent most of his career with Cincinnati (1998-2005). His best season was 2004 when he hit .324 with 24 HR and 99 RBI with an OBP of .381.
Casey is also considered to be a great team player. He has also done a great deal of charity work, including serving meals at the Cor Unum Meals Center in Lawrence.
