Read: Dan Roche's Blog

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The Red Sox picked up their option Friday on Tim Wakefield for the 2009 season.

Wakefield has a special contract that he signed in 2005 that allows for an annual $4 million club option that extends into perpetuity.

He has spent 14 seasons with the Red Sox.

Wakefield, 42, was 10-11 with a 4.13 ERA in 30 starts in 2008.

The Red Sox also announced that catchers David Ross and Jason Varitek and infielder Alex Cora have elected free agency.
