Kansas City Chiefs Hire Pioli As New GM

BOSTON (WBZ) ― New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli will become head of football operations for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Pioli interviewed with the Chiefs earlier this month after the Cleveland Browns hired former New York Jets coach Eric Mangini.

Patriots Coach Bill Belichick praised Pioli in a written statement and has nothing but well wishes for one of his best friends. "To sum up in words everything Scott Pioli has meant to this organization and to me personally would be difficult, if not impossible.

"From the day I met him, he has demonstrated a passion for football and respect for the game that is second to none. It has been extremely gratifying for me to follow Scott's career ascension from the bottom of the totem pole in Cleveland to his place as a pillar of championship teams in New England.

"Now with the opportunity to steer his own ship and a vision of building a winner, there is no more capable, hardworking, loyal, team-oriented person than Scott Pioli."

A person close to the negotiations told The Associated Press that Pioli, 43, would have complete charge of football operations, reporting only to Chiefs board chairman Clark Hunt. The person asked not to be identified because no official announcement had been made.

Pioli became vice president of personnel for New England in 2002 and has spent the past nine years helping build the Patriots into a powerhouse team.

The Chiefs were 2-14 this past season.
