Music

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Today on Sunday, we explore music. We will show you the healing power of music at the Shriner's Burn Institute and we'll find out why so many Berklee College of Music students sing the praises of one particular professor.

Bobby McFerrin
He is best remembered for his 1980's hit "Don't Worry Be Happy" was a 1980's anthem,  but there is so much more to this master of improvisation and jazz icon.

Donna McElroy
At Boston's Berklee College of Music, there is always a waiting list for voice classes taught by Associate Professor Donna McElroy. And if you are lucky enough to get into the class, be on time. The door is locked to latecomers.  Donna McElroy who has sung with some of country music's biggest names is very serious about teaching young talent. We went to her class on improvisational skills to find out why.

Music that Heals
Doctors and Nurses at the Shriners Hospitals Boston  burn institute use the latest technology in treating young burn victims, particularly in helping them cope with the pain and anxiety of their wounds.  Music is one of their most effective tools.  We go on patient rounds with a music therapist and we welcome Mary Jo Baryza, a Physical Therapist at Shriner's who has some 36 years experience in pediatric physical therapy.

Just Thinking
Back in the close knit community in Little Rock, Arkansas where I grew up, most girls took piano lessons, regardless of desire or talent. I had neither so I've always believed those two dollar sessions with Mrs. Smith who lived across the street. were the price of my mother's pipe dreams. Over time, I did learn to recognize good music and more importantly I learned to appreciate those who mastered it. Whether it's making music or running a business, the highest levels of creativity are reached through discipline,, a willingness to work at the craft. The search for life's deepest and highest truths follows the same rules. There is effort involved. It's called practicing the presence of God.  In a 24/7 world run on caffeine and blackberries,  the notion of quiet time, considering life's rhythms and possibilities seems remote even counter productive.  But the wisest among us, from poets to prophets have always deemed it as necessary time, a reminder that each of us is the raw material out of which the highest potential of creation can flow.

Sunday is proud to present Donna McElroy.
