CHITA RIVERA If you know the history of Broadway musical theatre, you are well aware of the gifts of Chita Rivera. With dazzling performances in many shows from West Side Story to a Dancer's life, Chita is a legend of extraordinary accomplishment. In town recently to accept a lifetime achievement award from Boston Youth Moves, Chita talked with Liz about her career.

JUST THINKING Chita Rivera has many gifts, a commanding presence, a dynamic personality, an intimacy of movement that draws her audience right into her joy. She has razzle dazzled them on stage for 57 years. That's quite a testament to her endurance and her deep reservoir of creative energy.
Creativity is one of those illusive concepts that is sometimes easier to recognize than it is to define. I believe it is the ability to transcend what is with something new. It is driven by imagination, anchored in originality and connects us to the whole. It is why music touches our soul and a sunset can make us cry. It springs as much from heartbreak as from joy.
Great thinkers have suggested creativity is the point where human potential meets the power of the divine. It takes a creative force to change the world's darkness into light. It takes a creative spirit to change the world's fear into hope. Whether you are a dancer or a dishwasher, you have been given a gift. It is the most cherished expression of your being. The challenge is not simply in recognizing it, but in deciding how it's used.
