JUST THINKING

When I think of style, I think of this bright little girl I see often at the market, who clearly takes great pride in dressing herself. Her name is Katie, she's about seven and she prefers rainbow hues, lots of layers, and glitter often all at once. Katie likes to wear two different colored sox. There might be a skirt on top of pants, why have to choose? And she loves hats, her mom's hats, her dad's hats. Gender and age never hold her back. For many of us, style is conformity expense and work. Katie's style is the substance of play, joy with matching laughter wrapped around spontaneity and everything is worn lightly. That combination can go with anything. Katie must have very special parents who clearly know when to hold on and when to let go, and in the balance they are helping to define a woman who will shine with a glow that is all her own. Every time I get dressed, I try to remember my little friend with a touch of this, a splash of that, and throw it all together why choose? . Here's to the Katie in all of us who figure out a way to make up a few rules of our own, boldly and unapologetically perfecting the art of being ourselves.
