Commitment

(WBZ) Today we explore the idea of commitment.

Edward James Olmos-
We begin with a Sunday conversation with one of Hollywoods most socially involved actors, Edward James Olmos. The star of the movies "Stand and Deliver," "Selena" and TV's "Battlestar Gallactica," Olmos is committed to the Diabetes Foundation, Boys and Girls clubs, the Heart Association and United Nations Childrens Educational Fund. Olmos recently visited the campus of Emerson College where he spoke about the craft of acting and the social responsibility of celebrity.

Committed to Quality:
One of Bostons most talked about new destinations is the Liberty Hotel, built in the re-designed Charles Street Jail. While the idea of commitment at this Beacon Hill site takes on many definitions,… the people who run Liberty like to talk about their commitment to history, luxury and comfort.

Sister Bridgette
Sister Bridgette Hasse is the spiritual director of The Boston Home in Dorchester, a specialized care facility for people with advanced cases of Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological diseases. Sister Bridget has committed her life to helping people experience courage and healing in the midst of disability.

Fertility after 40
Geena Davis did it, as well as Susan Sarandon and now Nicole Kidman…a growing number of women are opting to delay pregnancy until after 40. Despite their determination and perseverance, it is not always an easy choice. Our guest Lyn Swirda believes she can help them. Lyn is an acupuncturist and founding director of the Fertile Garden a center for Complementary Medicine.

JUST THINKING:
I was barely seven years old when my father took me to see Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King at the Arch Street Baptist Church in Little Rock. King was touring the south after the successful Montgomery bus boycott and I remember sitting jammed up in the balcony of the overflowing church. I was not quite sure who or what a King was, but judging by the size and excitement of the crowd I knew that this was not a regular church service and this was no ordinary preacher. I have done a lot of thinking about Dr. King's command of that extraordinary moment in time. And I still have many questions about the connections and contradictions of this particular convergence of religion and politics

Was King a political strategist or a spiritual leader? Was he a pragmatist or idealist? I believe at his core, Dr. King was committed to love. Defining love is always difficult. We often get lost in its romantic context. Dr. King defined love at a deeper level as an act of the will. It took an enormous amount of work and it was aimed at changing people's minds and hearts. Dr. Kings was a risky undertaking but then real commitment always is.
