Borders
Those things that divide yet define us.
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
GERALDO
We begin with a look at border wars, the volatile issue of immigration. Television journalist Geraldo Rivera's new book "Hispanic-Why Americans fear Hispanics in the US" has triggered some explosive debate.
BOSTON SMILE PROJECT
Bren Bataclan is an artist and founder of The Boston Smile Project started as his creative response to the cold and aloof attitudes he says he encountered when he first moved from the West Coast to New England.
ONE THOUSAND VILLAGES
For many people fair trade is a sign they see in a few stores. In fact it is a movement that enables marginalized producers and artisans to earn a fair living. There are a growing number of American businesses that work on fair trade, including a wonderful store called Ten Thousand Villages that works with over 100 artisan groups in more than 30 countries in Africa,
Asia and Latin America to bring you fair trade jewelry, home decor, gifts and more.
GBIO
This is the ten year anniversary celebration for one of Boston's most visible and influential grassroots organizations working on social justice issues-- The Greater Boston Interfaith Organization
The GBIO claims thousands of members from a number of religious organizations including Muslims and Jews. Two members Rabbi Stephanie Kolin of Temple Israel in Boston and Bilal Kaleen, director of the Massachusetts Muslim American Society join us in studio.
JUST THINKING There was this bright little story in the Boston globe not too long ago about bicycle riding lessons for adults. The instructor, 59 year old Susan McLucas, according to the article can help just about anybody master a bike. Her students, mainly women take her course for a number of reasons, they grew up without bikes or they took nasty spills or they have simply always been afraid. Whatever has held them back, they decided to do something we all should try, getting beyond difficult boundaries in our lives to take on something new. We are by nature creatures of habit and change, any change can be frightening. It is much easier to stay in a space that makes you feel secure than to move in a new direction with no guarantees of destination. But change can offer the greatest possibilities for growth. Life in all its forms is a process of creation. It is in perpetual motion. Whether we recognize it or not, everything around us is changing, all the time. Summer turns to fall, Our children grow up over night. Making a change doesn't have to begin with a huge leap of faith. Take a few baby steps. Learn to ride a bike. Order something different on the menu. Cut back on those law and order reruns and start a fun new project. You have to be willing to let go of what you are for what you can become.
