Just Thinking
"Take care," was the older woman's goodbye. The younger woman laden with two toddlers, bags, and toys made her way into the security line behind me.  The airport was packed.  The line moved slowly and the woman was clearly at the edge of her rope. Her hair was unkempt, her eyes were puffy. As I offered to help her with her bags, she leaned in and whispered, "I just couldn't tell her."  Before I could respond, her story tumbled out as if I had been with her all along.  Her marriage had ended.  She didn't have the heart to tell her mother who'd brought her to the gate.  Her life was spiraling out of control what with her babies' needs, the bills, his family. She didn't know how she was going to take care of everything.  Divorce, like death and losing a job, is one of the most traumatic transitions we go through in life, yet women in particular often think our only job is getting everybody else through.  We forget we need proper sleep, nutrition and most importantly support. As we parted company, I gave the young woman's hand a squeeze and said, take care. Later on the plane, the flight attendant's emergency instructions were clearer to me than ever before.  Before you can help anybody else, make sure you've taken care of yourself.
