JUST THINKING
My father loved to tell us the story of Grandma Walker's penny kitchen. His mother was a widow who raised three children alone in a Newark neighborhood where life was hard even before the depression. Grandma Walker's philosophy of life was based on three points. She loved to cook, knew how to stretch a meal and she never doubted her ability to take care of her family. When the depression hit their already struggling community she decided to sell dinners. While nobody could afford to pay much, everybody now and then could scrape a few pennies together for Grandma Walker's simple but delicious fare. She put those pennies together to buy more food. And everybody went away full and happy. This was not the start of an economic turn around in my family. It was enough to get them and their neighbors through a difficult time.
It is easy to become discouraged and frightened when you're hit with circumstances out of your control. Hard times can actually be our most creative times. This economic crisis could be just the point where your true purpose will be revealed because you've been pushed out of your comfort zone. History if full of stories about ordinary people who do extraordinary things when they persevere against great odds. Don't throw away your confidence. Even now, especially now it can be richly rewarded.
