Character

(WBZ) Today our show is about character, as it applies to makeup, morale or in the world of acting…a portrayal.

Dennis HAYSBERT
We begin today with a Sunday conversation with an actor for whom character has been a huge part of the characters he plays. Dennis Haysbert is the star of the hit CBS prime time show "The Unit"--you may also know him at the president we loved on "24"--and from all those Allstate commercials. For Haysbert, the characters he picks echo his own core values.

BLUELIGHT
Time and life of course can add much character to our faces but it doesn't mean we have sacrifice health and beauty as a condition of aging. One of the latest cutting edge dermatological techniques is called photodynamic light therapy. It's also known as blue light. It's a new and effective treatment for skin problems ranging from cancer to acne.

COMICS
Comic book characters have been part of the American culture since the late 19th century and for generations they've made us laugh, fed our fantasies and helped define our heroes. In a world of ipods, video games, and the internet, you might think comic books are a lost art. Not so, say the folks at Boston's Newbury Comics. We talked to founder and owner Mike Dreese.

Self Esteem Boston
What others think about us is not nearly as important as what we think about ourselves. Self esteem is the foundation for the good life. But it is not necessarily easy for everybody. That's why Marion Davis' work is so important. She is the founder and executive director of Self Esteem Boston Educational Institute and an old friend.

MAKEOVER UPDATE
While we are on the subject of self esteem, we have received a lot of viewer email inquiring about a special Sunday friend, Doris.

You'll recall Doris is a former resident of Casa Myrna Vasquez, a shelter for victims of domestic violence. We met her shortly after she and her two children moved into a new home. Our good friends at Home goods surprised her with a home makeover. What a huge boost it was for Doris! She tells us she feels her life is finally coming together. She is working towards her GED and taking English classes. She says her children are thriving. We wish Doris the best,…and we thank Home Goods for all the good work.

JUST THINKING
Tarzan was my first Saturday morning hero. That was back during the days of black and white television when you actually had to get up and change the channel, and Johnny Weismuller portrayed the king of the jungle. For me His heroism was connected to his physical ability and the fact that he could jump on an elephant.. every week Weismuller's Tarzan, fleeing from some angry tribe, would grab a vine and swing across over a cliff to safety on another mountain. That took my breathe away until eventually I began to notice that hundreds of Africans would plunge over the cliff into oblivion every week. Tarzan's boldness came at too high a price.
We all need heroes. They stir our imaginations and give us goals beyond the ordinary. The challenge comes in defining heroes. Are they rich, powerful, or is there some measure of moral excellence on which we can all agree.
In these days of corporate corruption, sports cheating, and a growing distrust in the political system,… its not only difficult to pick out the good guys, it's almost impossible to recognize the values.
