Extras

This show is called EXTRAS. Those surprises and efforts that can add so much, and mean even more.

BEBE NEUWIRTH

The Boston Youth Moves Dance Company recently invited actress Bebe Neuwirth to town to help them honor dance great Chita Rivera. The night of the gala, Bebe talked with me about her love of dance, her personal struggles and her inspiration.

WATERWORKS

Taking a look at Sunday real estate, there are many condominiums developments in the Boston area that claim the description "luxury."   What does that really mean?  We found one definition at the new Waterworks at Chestnut Hill on the Brighton/Brookline line.

BARBERSHOP LOUNGE

Remember when a barbershop was all about a haircut, a shave and maybe a good conversation.  The Barbershop Lounge on Newbury Street has taken men's grooming to a much higher level.

TEEN VOICES                                                                                  Teen Voices Magazine is a Boston based non-profit publication with a national readership of 75 thousand. It is well produced, slick and colorful, offering a positive image of young women.  Its extra benefit and its most important asset is the fact that it is created, written and edited by teenage girls.  We took a recent tour of the magazine's offices. Saun Green, the program director for Teen Voices joins us in studio.

JUST THINKING

Both programs we visited today Teen Voices Magazine and Boston Youth Moves offer the young people they serve many advantages.   Not every participant will become a  journalist,  or a professional dancer.  But all the young people will no doubt grow in self confidence, they will develop positive and beautiful ways to express themselves, and there's the added and often overlooked benefit that they are learning what it means to create a community.  Whether it's dancing or writing, our spirits soar when we work as one body.  The psalmist reminds us how good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity.  In a modern culture that celebrates individualism and independence, it is more important than ever that our children understand the value of community, realizing that we are not here simply to compete with each other but also to support each other.   It is easy to forget that humankind has survived story not because we destroyed our enemies, but because we have learned to work together sharing skills and information.  Taking community seriously helps us look beyond our own needs, to see the bigger picture and realize how and why we fit in.

SUNDAY IS PROUD TO PRESENT KATANI.
