Classics

(WBZ) Today our show is about classics, that which sets the standard, the finest, the quintessential.

RAY BOURQUE
We begin with one of the best of Boston sports. Ray Borque set more records while playing hockey in Boston than any athlete before him. He was one of the Bruins longstanding leaders, He's a hall of famer and most people say he's an all around good guy. Sports fans still love him even though he won the Stanley Cup for some other team.
Ray and I talked about that decision along with some others he's made in his life…at a new restaurant he owns on Hanover street in Boston's North End.

BROOKLINE BABY DOCTOR
So you have a new baby in the family and you're looking for advice. We've got just the book for you….dr. dan's last word on babies and other humans. It not only offers advice on parenting but has a fascinating story on its own creation. It's co-author our guest Nancy Heller.

The book is called Dr. Dan's Last word on babies and other humans….It is a common sense approach to parenting. And that's a good thing. The proceeds from the book go to a memorial fund set up to benefit kids.

LESPALIER
This is a city of great restaurants, but when you are looking for the top of the line, you will probably end up at L'Espalier in the Backbay. Located in a beautiful space with a wait staff that pays extraordinary attention to detail, L'Espalier is credited with being the first independently owned restaurant to bring haute cuisine to Boston.

CLASSIC BIKING
If you're looking for the classic exercise for babyboomers, put those golf clubs away. Cycling is quickly becoming the sport of the boomer generationIt's a great workout, easy on aging and damaged joints and offers an exciting and intimate way to see the world, as I just found out in a recent cycling trip to the Tuscany region of Italy. The trip organized by the wonderful folks at Ciclismo Tours in Arlington. Liz traveled with my biking buddy Verna Myers of Newton..

JUST THINKING

As a baby boomer I can certainly understand why cycling has taken over as the classic sport of my generation. Doping scandals notwithstanding, It's a vigorous and beneficial workout that doesn't take out my aging knees, keeps my weight down,…lifts my mental outlook.
….the fact that it is not as stressful on the body as running means the ride can go on for long periods of time, so the endorphin plus the rhythm of being on the open road can open up a different perspective on exertion. Cycling is a wonderful way to intimately connect with a world that doesn't get enough of our attention. You tend to notice things that you might not notice in a car….a turtle making its way across a country road or the smell of honeysuckle in the morning air.
The best thing about cycling for me is what it teaches about endurance….not just on a bike, but in life….
Hills are tough, and for me downhills can be frightening… you learn that whenever you get to the rough parts,…the key is to keep pedaling…. Slow down but don't let the hard stuff stop you. The win is in your ability to keep moving through.
