Guess what day it is?
Across the internet, Web sites are once again embracing April Fool's Day with mock homepages, broken tools, aimless links and more than a few surprises. While never formally a holiday, cultures around the world hold April 1 as a traditional day for pranks, practical jokes and wild goose chases on friends and enemies alike.
Here's a sampling of what went online for April 1, 2008:
Butterfinger Renames Candy Bar
http://www.thefingerbar.com/
After 80 years of satisfying American's sweet tooth, the company that
produces Butterfinger candy bars tricked its eaters into thinking the
bar would be renamed "The Finger."
Google Gmailhttp://mail.google.com/mail/help/customtime/index.html
Ever miss a deadline and need to send an e-mail before you wrote it? Worry no more with Gmail's Custom Time feature, allowing late workers everywhere the ability to pre-date your e-mail messages to 1 hour ago, Last night, Last week or whenever you really should have sent it. "Be on time. Every time."
Google.auhttp://www.google.com.au/intl/en/gday/index.htmlDown under already hits the GMT time zones ahead of America, so what better place to launch gDay with MATE, a new Google enhancement "enabling you to search content on the internet before it is created." That's right: Google's Machine Automated Temporal Extrapolation allows you to search the future. Do no evil indeed.
ESPN 4 Election Deathmatch Coveragehttp://www.espn4.com/Tired of following the Democratic primary race in Campaign '08? Check out this sports network's solution: an Olympics of politically incorrect-yet-spot-on events such as the Dick Cheney skeet shooting contest, the Al Gore 20000k Eco Fun Run and the George Bush Constitutional Hurdles.
"What better way to settle the fight between Democratic Presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama than with a winner-take-all, fight-to-the-finish, loser-goes-home-crying good old fashioned deathmatch?" boasts the page at www.espn4.com.
Think Geekhttp://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/betamaxhd.htmlBetamax to HD-DVD Converter. You must be at least 30 years old to get that joke. On the other hand, WiiSports for iPhone sounds... well, cool actually - as does the Spazztroids caffeinated breakfast cereal. However, let's pass on both the Super Pii Pii Bros virtual urinal and p-Teq USBÂ Pregnancy Test Kit. This online retail store always features the best must-have but can-never-actually-have items on April 1.
BBC iPlayer / Penguins Documentary on YouTubehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23qDl1aH9l4The video starts off fairly mundane: A British narrator extolling the wonders of the famous arctic bird. Then comes the twist: Who wants to winter in the arctic when the tropical rain forest is just one short migration away? No problem for this unique subspecies.
Virglehttp://www.google.com/virgle/index.htmlVirgin Galactic space travel + Google + Mars = spring break on the red planet. Apply now.
YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/Get ready to be "Rickrolled." All of the videos in the "Featured Videos" section of YouTube's homepage redirect you to the classic '80's tune "Never Gonna Give You Up," by Rick Astley.
eHarmony Founder Finds Love With Match.comhttp://www.onlinedatingmagazine.com/news2008/neilwarrenlove.htmlMaybe it's just a case on one business rival having a go at its competition, but the story is pretty funny: The online site of "Online Dating Magazine" posts an exclusive report about Dr. Neil Clark Warren, the founder of eHarmony, at last getting his perfect mate in life by using Match.com.
"It's a Match," quotes "Warren" on the site. "I could tell immediately when I saw Olga that her and I would be matched on 27.3 of 29 dimensions."
