Ill. Burglary Suspects Ask Cops For Ride Home
ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (CBS) ―
Five Chicago teens were arrested Sunday and charged with burglarizing a northwest suburban video game store. Two of them were caught after trying to hitch a ride in a police car.
Chicago police received an anonymous call about 2:40 a.m. Sunday from a resident who heard glass breaking at a Video Games store, Deputy Chief Jim Jobe said.
When police arrived, they saw a shattered window and three men inside the store. Two ran out the back door and got away. The third man, Ronald Pickett, 18, was captured a block from the store.
Police also arrested two male teens who were allegedly acting as lookouts: Michael Gonzalez, 18 and a 16-year-old, also from Chicago.
An hour after the burglary, the two men who fled the scene flagged down a police car and asked for a ride. The officer, who explained his department didn't offer rides, noticed the men matched the descriptions of the men wanted for the Video Games burglary.
Harwood Heights called Norridge police, who took custody of Juan Oropez, 18, and Domonique Cunningham, 17.
When questioned, they admitted they had a gun, which they tossed. Police found a five-shot detective special on a balcony at a local motel, Jobe said.
Pickett, Oropez, Cunningham, Gonzalez and the juvenile were all charged with burglary. Cunningham and Gonzalez were also charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
