Mass. Man Gets Jail Time For Stealing $1 From Girl
ATTLEBORO, Mass. (CBS) ―
A homeless man who stole a $1 bill and a bag of empty cans from a 10-year-old girl has been sentenced to nine months in jail.
Robert Rowell Jr., 44, pleaded guilty on Monday to larceny in Attleboro District Court, and was credited with three months already served while awaiting trial.
The girl's mother, Holly-Lyn Giannini, told The Sun Chronicle she was happy with the sentence, even though Rowell may like it as well.
"Jail to them is not like going to jail for anyone else. Jail to him means getting everything for free. When they are homeless and they go to jail, they get three square meals a day," she said.
"Maybe he'll find something in jail. Maybe he'll find God or something,"
Authorities say Rowell was one of two men who robbed Mahogany-Marie Bethea as she was headed to a local market to cash in the cans on July 16.
The case against his co-defendant, Kevin Egan, 50, is pending.
He is free on bail and due back in court Nov. 20 for a pretrial hearing.
