A mailman found more than envelopes when he emptied a Boston mailbox Saturday a tiny kitten had been dropped inside the bin.
The 2-pound kitten was found trapped inside the mailbox on the corner of Hyde Park. She had been pushed through the small opening at the top of the box sometime after Friday afternoon's pickup.
The 8-week old kitten was taken to the MSPCA center in Jamaica Plain where she is recovering. Officials have named her Postina, and she will be put up for adoption.
Animal abandonment is a felony crime in Massachusetts, punishable by up to a $2,500 fine and 5 years in prison. Anyone with information about who dropped the kitten inside the mail bin is asked to contact the MSPCA law enforcement at 617-522-6008.
MSPCA officials say more and more pet owners have been surrendering their animals as the economic recession continues. MSPCA adoption centers accepted 28,000 animals last year. The organization says there is a 48 percent increase in pet owners citing financial reasons for surrendering their pets.
