Postal Worker Adopts Kitten Dropped In Mailbox

A kitten found
dropped and abandoned inside a Boston mail bin has been adopted by a U.S. postal worker.
The 2-pound kitten was found June 13 inside a mailbox in Hyde Park. She had been pushed through the small opening at the top of the box sometime after an afternoon mail pickup the day before.
The 8-week old kitten was taken to the MSPCA center in Jamaica Plain where officials named her Postina.

This past weekend, Postina was adopted out to postal worker George Knapp and his wife, Dani-Jean Stuart, of Weare, N.H. The couple had been looking to adopt a kitten since their previous cat died one year ago.
Postina was promptly re-named P.D., standing for "Postage Due."
The MSPCA said the kitten's story made international headlines and the organization received support from as far abroad as Holland and Italy.
"Postina has captured the attention of pet lovers across the globe and shone a much needed light on the seriousness of pet abandonment," said Meagan Rock, manager of the MSPCA-Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center. "We also want to remind the public that Postina's story is shared by thousands of homeless cats that are dumped, neglected as well as abused each year and come to us looking for care and a new home."
Animal abandonment is a felony crime in Massachusetts, punishable by up to a $2,500 fine and 5 years in prison. Anyone with information about who dropped the kitten inside the mail bin is asked to contact the MSPCA law enforcement at 617-522-6008.
MSPCA officials say more and more pet owners have been surrendering their animals as the economic recession continues. MSPCA adoption centers accepted 28,000 animals last year. The organization says there is a 48 percent increase in pet owners citing financial reasons for surrendering their pets.
