A show dog missing for more than a day has been found safe at Logan International Airport.
The pointer named Spencer had no trouble getting to Boston but after he arrived he got loose.
It all ended well, and Wednesday there was a happy reunion. Spencer was cold and a little scraped up when he was found, but the 15-month-old pointer is amazingly alive.
"Just thinking they might not find him was pretty heartbreaking," said Spencer's owner, Paige O'Neil.
The show dog took off when his crate was opened on the tarmac after landing at Logan from New Zealand Tuesday morning.
"When he arrived in cargo area one men thought he was shaking to pee, so they took him outside and he slipped out of his collar and took off," said Spencer's new owner, Phyllis Kroll.
O'Neil was bringing Spencer to Kroll as a gift. They said they never dreamed they'd have to go through 30 hours of searching for him.
"All night long I dreamed of him running loose at the airport, and it was so cold last night," O'Neil said.
But by 2 p.m. on Wednesday it was a pilot waiting on the runway who spotted Spencer.
"This could have ended very badly," said friend Nancy Tuthill. "In the back of your mind the chances of catching him were slim. This is wonderful. It's like a Christmas miracle!"
After a bath and dinner, Spencer headed to Vermont Wednesday night to begin life as a show dog in the United States and hopefully put the experience at Logan behind him.
American Airlines said the cargo employee had good intentions but never should have let the dog out.
The airline has refunded the owner's money for flying the dog to Boston. It also picked up the tab for their hotel and said it will review the situation with employees.
