New England Aquarium Gets A Big, Furry Addition
450 Pound Fur Seal Joins Aquarium's Marine Mammal Center
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
He's big. He's furry. And he's back in Boston.
Baranov, also known as 'Bear', has returned to the New England Aquarium. The 450-pound
northern fur seal had been staying at Connecticut's Mystic Aquarium while his new $10 million home was being built in Boston.
Northern fur seals are found in the frigid waters of the north Pacific and have the second thickest fur in the world. Because of the value of their fur, they were nearly hunted to the point of extinction in the 1800s. Their population is currently listed as vulnerable.
