Raccoon Attacks School Crossing Guard

SWAMPSCOTT (WBZ) ― A crossing guard in Swampscott is recovering after she was attacked by a raccoon.

Judith Hapgood, 55, told WBZ she was bitten by a raccoon outside the Clarke Elementary School on Norfolk Avenue Tuesday afternoon. Hapgood said she kicked it away, but the wild animal came back at her.

She fought with it again, but it eventually ran off. Police put the school under lockdown as a precaution until they caught the raccoon.

Once it was put down, students were allowed to leave.

Hapgood has some big bites on her leg. She is now taking antibiotics and is waiting for test results to see if the raccoon was rabid. Those results should be back within ten days.

Hapgood said she has no plans to leave her job.
