Each year, WBZ's Jon Keller celebrates the holidays by narrowing down the Top National Turkeys from the past year. There is normally an abundance to choose from, and Jon found 2009 to be no exception.

CASH FOR CLUNKERS
The Cash for Clunkers program seemed like a good idea. Give the auto industry a badly-needed boost while replacing gas-guzzlers with cleaner-running vehicles. But you know what they say about the best-laid plans. The economic stimulus
turned out to be fleeting; environmental benefits, negligible. Cash for turkeys might have been a better idea.
SWEET CAROLINE
Bless her and the entire family for all they've done, but the cold hard truth is Caroline Kennedy's
brief bid for appointment to the U.S. Senate proved a colossal political turkey. No game plan, no sales pitch, no clue. No wonder she got gobbled up by the process.
REALITY DUO
Among the year's sadder turkeys were
Jon and Kate Gosselin. The televised saga of their struggles to raise eight kids turned ugly when their marriage hit the skids and they both seemed to come down with limelight fever. For the sake of those kids, one can only hope sanity and privacy soon prevail.
BALLOON PARENTS
When it comes to dicey parenting, there were no bigger turkeys than the Heene's,
reality-show wanna-bees who exploited their kids, the taxpayers, and the nation as they played out their narcissistic fantasies.
GATES-GATE
I'd be remiss if I didn't slip in one last national turkey with a local connection, Harvard law professor Skip Gates. His
irritation at a police investigation of a prowler reported on his property quickly mushroomed into a full-scale temper tantrum that wound up unnecessarily embarrassing President Obama and himself.
Count that turkey among the many gifts we gave the nation this year
