Chelsea Gas Station Turns Green With Flex Fuel
CHELSEA (WBZ) ―
A gas station in Chelsea will be the first gas station in the state to start selling the corn-based fuel E-85, which is mostly ethanol.
E-85 is cleaner and cheaper but drivers don't get as many miles per gallon. E-85 consists of 15 percent gasoline and 85 percent corn alcohol.
"It has far less carbon, so in terms of air pollution, it's much better than gasoline," said Ed Burke, who will start selling the flex fuel at his Chelsea station on Thursday.
Many late model cars are flex fuel compatible, meaning they can use gasoline or E-85. However, many drivers don't know their cars are compatible.
"Nationally, only 30 percnet of the people know what E-85 is, and I'll bet in Massachusetts, it's 15 percent, so it's a steep learning curve," Burke explained.
