Eco-Moms Helping Environment One House At A Time

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Many mothers are taking matters of the environment into their own hands. They are joining the Eco-Mom alliance, a non profit group committed to preventing climate change one household at a time.

The alliance sponsors a ten step challenge that motivates mothers to do everything from composting to recycling. Other steps include unplugging electronic devices when they are not in use.

Kimberly Pinkson, the group's founder, says, "We just ask people, just to take one at a time. Choose one that's doable for you, and one that's very real and tangible and easily accessible." Although the alliance only started about two years ago, it how has 11,000 members from as far away as Nigeria and India.

During a meeting, the moms will pass around non toxic cleaning products and learn how to prepare waste free school lunches. The best biodegradable detergents and locally grown food are also hot topics at these sessions. Jennifer Monson is one of the mothers who attends these meetings. "We can do little things and feel good about that. Then once you kind have the momentum from that, you can move onto the next one,. We're part of a sisterhood and we can be part of this movement."

If people complain that going green is costly or time consuming, Pinkson just tells them that it takes a little creativity. "Like we always say, we're not asking you to change the world. We're just asking you to rethink what you are already doing." Maybe future mothers will thank them.

The Eco Mom Alliance estimates that there are 82 million moms in the United States, so they believe the potential impact can be huge.
