The largest tornado outbreak on record took place on the night of April 3 into the early morning of April 4, 1974. There were 148 tornadoes covering 13 states in the Ohio Valley and the southeastern United States. On the original Fujita scale, 6 of the tornadoes were rated F5. 350 people perished and 5300 were injured. Alabama, Kentucky and Ohio were the hardest hit states. Xenia, Ohio was 70% destroyed and 34 people were killed there by one of these F5 tornadoes that produced estimated winds of 261-318 mph!
