Wednesday's Child: 11-Year-Old Travon

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Travon is a soft-spoken, but an engaging youngster of Latino and African-American heritage who aims to please the adults in his life. Currently, he lives in a group home where he is doing well and takes pride in his accomplishments. Travon is ready to join a permanent family who will not only share in his successes but also help him to work through his challenges.

Travon, 11, enjoys staying active and is a competitive athlete. He has participated on basketball and basebeall teams in the past and is also an excellent swimmer, according to his social worker. Travon is up for just about any outdoor activity, including taking nature walks. During quieter moments, he likes watching movies, playing video games and working on school science projects.

Travon is going into the sixth grade next school year. He gets along with his peers and is well-liked by his teachers. He loves receiving lots of one-on-one adult attention. Travon is now reading close to grade level and has the potential to continue making strides academically. He says he might like to become a gym teacher when he gets older.

Due to issues from his past, Travon participates in weekly therapy and is learning to accept limits and expectations. He needs structure and consistency both at home and in school. Travon is learning to be a leader, and he would benefit from having a positive male role model in his life.

Legally free for adoption, Travon will need time to transition into a new family. He would do best as the youngest or only child in a two-parent family. Travon hopes to find a loving family who will provide him with a peaceful home. It is important to Travon that he be supported in maintaining his connection to his siblings who have already been adopted. Travon will surely thrive once he has a committed family by his side.

To learn more about Travon, and about adoption from foster care, call the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) at 617-54-ADOPT (617-542-3678) or visit www.mareinc.org. The sooner you call, the sooner a waiting child will have "a permanent place to call HOME."
