Man Pleads In Theft From Blind Maine Man
SEBEC, Maine (AP) ―
A Sebec man has pleaded guilty to bilking an 82-year-old blind man out of $10,000.
Seventy-seven-year-old Herbert Swartz pleaded guilty to theft by unauthorized taking when he appeared before a Piscataquis County Superior Court judge on Monday.
The Bangor Daily News says prosecutors are recommending a 45-day jail sentence, probation and restitution to the victim.
Also charged in the case was 59-year-old Elizabeth "Bess" Cutler, also of Sebec. The victim is a man from Stony Point, N.Y., who spends summers in Maine. He was befriended by the suspects, who took him on errands to the bank and grocery store.
Charges against Cutler were dropped after she paid $3,000 in restitution.
