Dartmouth Trustees Set Budget-cutting Targets

HANOVER, N.H. (AP) ― The Dartmouth College Board of Trustees is asking the administration to cut $50 million a year from the college budget in each of the next two fiscal years.

Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim discussed budget projections and priorities with trustees during the board's annual fall meeting in Hanover on Friday and Saturday.

The board asked the administration to prepare a budget plan for fiscal years 2011 through 2014, with a target of $50 million in cuts for fiscal year 2011 and another $50 million in cuts for 2012.

Kim told the Valley News that he will seek creative ways to meet those goals, but acknowledged that job cuts are inevitable as the school deals with a sharp drop in the value of its endowment brought on by the volatility in global financial markets.
